Michael Greger Messed Up! [2023 Update] – Vegan Vs. Carnivore Debate
Michael was featured on a public television debate against a carnivore recently, and his performance wasn’t rosy.
- From an intellectual standpoint – it was.
- From a persuasion standpoint – it had much left too offer.
In this article you’ll learn a third-party overview about Michael Greger M.D.:
- Who Michael Greger is? The FULL background.
- Can he be trusted? (or not)
- And how good he is at debates (Not as great as you might imagine)
Let’s dive right in:
Who Is Michael Greger, MD?
Michael is a founding member and Fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
He has videos on more than 2,000 health topics freely available at NutritionFacts.org, with new videos and articles uploaded almost every day.
Michael is the founder and Chief Science Officer at the charity, and he and his leading team of researchers are scouring through the entire new nutrition science per year…
… so you don’t have to.
Important to know: Nutritionfacts.org is the ONLY source of non-governmental, non-profit nutrition information. This is very rare.
Is Michael Greger an internationally recognized speaker?
Absolutely. Dr. Greger has lectured at the Conference on World Affairs, testified before Congress, and was invited as an expert witness in the defense of Oprah Winfrey in the infamous “meat defamation” trial.
He also is a repeat-speaker in front of the USDA, positively influencing the government nutrition information (dietary guidelines).
These accolades definitely make him an internationally recognized speaker.
What Is Michael Greger’s Background?
He is a graduate of Cornell University School of Agriculture and Tufts University School of Medicine.
Again, Dr. Michael Greger is an actual physician – not a ‘PhD’ in a related field.
Is Michael Greger A New York Times Bestselling Author?
Yes, multiple times. Three of his recent books— How Not to Die, the How Not to Die Cookbook, and How Not to Diet all became New York Times Best Sellers.
His latest book, How to Survive a Pandemic, was released during the pandemic. Michael Greger is uniquely qualified in publishing a book on the pandemic, as he was a previous Director of Public Health of the Humane Society.
All proceeds he receives from the sales of his books go to charity.
In Short: Michael Greger Is One Of The Godfathers of Nutrition
To be frank: Michael Greger M.D. is my number one source of information on anything health and reversing disease related…
… and he should be yours too!
But, he’s unfortunatley not as good at debates as at writing!
While his opponent carniovre ‘Ivor Cummins’ has a fraction of the background that ‘Michael Greger’ has, Michael Greger was outclassed in persuasion (not brain power).
Let’s dive right in and see what Michael Greger MD could have done better:
Carnivore Vs. Vegan Debate 2023: First Impressions Count
Right at the start the carnivore guy gets an advantage. He comes in there with a professional lighting, tan, well groomed and well trained.
While Dr. Michael Greger looks like he’s doing the video from his mom’s basement. And he hasn’t seen a beach in years.
Which is ok, Dr. G is hard at work reading science papers – while the other guy probably is busy posing around in baby oil, but…
… the problem is that for the general audience your appearance matters.
And for the vast majority of the population, a tan and muscles are a sign of health – not cholesterol, triglycerides and C-reactive protein in the right range.
Although, that is indeed a better indicator of health than tan and muscles.
1. What Is Healthy? Perception Vs. Reality
First lesson of this video: Perception and reality. Often, there’s a Great Wall of China between these two.
- Objective REAL health is found in a blood test.
- But the perception of health is often looked for in appearances like a tan or muscles.
While some muscles can be healthy, a tan is the opposite of health. It always goes along with DNA damage. [1]
Yet reality doesn’t matter when persuading others, perception does. So your task as a person trying to convince others to go vegan, is to meet them where they’re at – not where you’re at. Or where you’d like them to meet you.
THEY want to learn from people that have the perception of health. So it’s your job to display the perception of health.
This is the first time Michael Greger messed up. Preparation. Less studies, more gym.
I’d like for this to be different, but Michael would convince thousands of people more to join vegan if he would be in an even more impressive physical shape.
2. Ineffective Persuasion Starts And Ends With ‘Told You So’
During the talk of the video, being confronted with so much continuous incompetence, Michael Greger started to lose his cool.
Once it is his turn, he starts attacking the carnivore dude quite directly:
- “I feel like I’m talking to a flat earther.”
Now for Michael Greger which is balls deep into the science, this statement makes sense.
The carnivore guy is so far off-base that to Michael, he seems like a flat earther.
But to the general average Joe, who never read a study in his or her lifetime, that statement sounds like Michael has just lost his mind.
This lesson here is: “Told you so.” – it’s a sentence you have to avoid at all cost.
Michael Greger said something truthful here, that most people will not get – but in a decade of time, once they get it, Michael can tell them: “Told you so.”
That’s ineffective persuasion, and Dr. G has messed up here.
Because ‘told you so’ implies, that you tell the person something, and then they go on to make their mistake ANYWAY.
Good for your ego, not good for the person as they made their mistake anyway.
So as an effective persuader, you gotta eliminate ‘told you so’ from your vocabulary.
3. The Last Impression Is The Lasting Impression
3rd lesson of the video: The last impression, is the lasting impression.
In all fairness, the interview was rigged against Michael Greger from the get go. The flat earther has more time to talk, and first and foremost, he got the chance to start AND end the interview.
In psychology, the last impression is the lasting impression. So whoever speaks last, got the biggest persuasive advantage.
Here’s a picture of Michael Greger when he notices that the system was rigged against him:
In a 3-4 hour debate, Michael Greger M.D. would have always won. It’s hard to really dominate an interview snippet that takes less than 10 minutes though.
